I fell in love with Peru immediately – it all intrigued me: the mountains, the people, the history of the Inca, the Spanish, the wildlife, the wilderness and the food. I’ve taken my children along to marvel with me. We’ve ridden through the Andes with cowboys on their beautiful Paso horses, stopping to eat still-warm steamed potatoes from their saddlebags for lunch. I’ve rested in gorgeous, boutique hotels, complete with crystal and silver service. I paddled in a kayak on Lake Titicaca to the floating reed villages – a place where times seems to have stood still (at 13,000 feet!). The colonial town of Arequipa, with its beautiful cobblestone streets, is accessible by a scenic train ride. Then there’s the Amazon, which in Peru, is accessible from multiple points and can be explored aboard riverboats that range from comfortable to downright decadent.
And I haven’t even mentioned Machu Picchu yet! My advice to my travelers is to stay more than 1 night and hike to the Sun Gate, Machu Picchu Mountain and the strenuous trek up to Huayna Picchu. Why hurry away from one of the most incredible places on earth? Unless, of course, you are headed to Lima to eat! There, you can hang out with a private chef for a couple of days, visiting the fish market at 4 a.m. and, with the chef’s guidance, shop for ingredients that you’ve never seen before. Together, you’ll cook a fabulous lunch. Ahhh…Lima: cervicherias, chifas, sushi, fine dining…the list goes on.
